but could be. Some are very oppressive, some are just idiotic.

well known to be environmentally disastrous when used in large quantities
for widespread pest control. Yet, small amounts, generally sprayed
indoors, are critical in preventing the spread of malaria through mosquitoes
in many countries. The approach of completely outlawing DDT favored
in most of the world contributes to the
deaths of millions — not to prevent a potential environmental disaster,
but because of an inflexible legalistic approach to the situation.
