About the Primary Author and Designer of Promethea.org

If you've come to this page wondering, "just who is this strange Phoenix fellow, anyway?" you may be disappointed in the lack of easy encapsulation to be found. I've never figured that out myself, and I have no idea what the 'is' in that sentence means, especially since I seem to undergo flux more than grammar would like to admit.

Nevertheless, I have figured out that I define myself by what I have overcome, and what I create. I've included some information on this page to reflect both what I've graduated from, and what I do.

I've also included bits of supplementary information that may lack significance, but seems to interest people (the sort of thing that lines dust jackets). I have strenuously resisted the sort of outrageous lies and embellishments that spice biography (more's the pity). Probably the most universally interesting thing about me is my Promethean aspect, and process of adaptation to my Promethean work, however much it may keep me from my otherwise cherished goal of becoming a Renaissance Man. Instead I try to pass for a civilized man, in these times I suspect will present as still-Dark Ages, in future evaluations.

Personal Profile

Biographical summary:

I'm a Promethean philosopher, writer, creative dissident and artistic dilettante with a wide variety of interests. I'm model agnostic in the sense of Robert Anton Wilson, a philosopher of the future in the wake of Nietzsche, and a gadfly following the example of Socrates, likewise quite ignorant in cosmic terms. (I only lay claim to some inkling about the world of human beings, an intricate enough universe to understand.)

Any special insight I have I would credit to the following:

• remarkable predecessors
• exposure to certain igniting experiences during my development
• affection for originality and some stubbornness to resist conformity
• maintaining confidence in my abilities
• passion for the aims more than the letter of my beliefs
• determination to keep an open mind and cross-pollinate ideas
• having an insatiable appetite for a mental vocabulary of useful models of many kinds
• staying flexible and agile enough to adjust models I use to interpret the world
• remaining willing to question myself and change my mind
• a willingness to do more with limited knowledge rather than drowning myself in a litter of information and quasi-education.

I have published a printed anthology, Rising in Words. I am also writing a novel dystopian novel entitled Pyramid of Babel for print. My more notable e-published projects thus far include The Promethean Trilogy, Self-Expression, Promethean Capitalism, Fighting Future War, Critiques of Democracy, The Renewing Dissident’s Notebook of Antipolitics, Autopoiesis and other Forethoughts, The Foundation of Prometheanism and Important Principles of Prometheanism. Some of my most important future projects include thorough critical examination of philosophical errors and their ramifications, and contribution to fundamental reformation of philosophy, but I most enjoy The Way of Prometheus.

I currently live and work in west Philadelphia, PA, where I relish both experimental and comfortable living and relationships. I try to explore and live Prometheanism as well as compose and write it.

Background summary:

I was born and grew up in Reading, Pennsylvania. During my youth I attended Antietam School District in Reading, PA (a lousy, lax public school), The Hill School in Pottstown, PA (a stuffy, competitive prep school), and the University of Chicago in Chicago, IL, which was said to "teach you how to think" rather than what to think, a claim which was to some fortunate extent accurate.

I continue to carry out creative work of my own and pursue studies independently (as I always have). Having excepted myself from the academic system and beholden means of support, I can say what I want, and conduct whatever intellectual work I see fit in the time I can afford, and may integrate art and science and any subjects I please.

To support my real work I have done design consulting (Web, GUI, graphic, multimedia), writing, editing, research and more, for private employers and scientific institutions.

Why call myself Phoenix?

The short answer is that Phoenix is the name of the Promethean aspect of myself, a name chosen for its significance to me, which I use to focus my Promethean self-expression.

I adopted the name Phoenix for myself as what I call a Promethean name. (A Promethean name is kind of anonym, following the tradition of internet pseudonyms, which serves as a nom de guerre for the war of ideas). In doing so I started a new tradition for Prometheans (in the general case, a very old tradition): to take a new name on an occasion of rebirth, which in this case is the change of identifying oneself with the role of Promethean, a leader of the Promethean movement and seeker of the life-interest of oneself and others.

The phoenix is a legendary bird which rises anew from the ashes of the fire which consumed it. It is therefore a symbol of both renewal and change, and embodies the duality of destruction and creation. Rising from a Promethean flame, this symbol acquires additional depth of meaning.

"You must wish to consume yourself in your own flame: how could you wish to become new unless you had first become ashes!"

— Friedrich Nietzsche, Thus Spoke Zarathustra I. 17. 'On the Way of the Creator'
